Conception

A New Life Begins...and Begins to Grow...

Even before a woman knows that she is pregnant, the baby has begun to grow. At conception, the child is a completely unique human life; its sex, hair and eye color and many other traits have already been determined. The following growth milestones are listed from time after conception (the time when sperm and egg were joined).

  • 3 weeks - the baby's heart starts beating

  • 4 weeks - the backbone and muscles are forming; arms, legs, eyes and ears begin to show

  • 5 weeks - five fingers can be seen on each hand

  • 6 weeks - the baby has brain waves and a heartbeat

  • 7 weeks - the baby can open its mouth and has fingers and toes

  • 8 weeks - the baby is now a little more than an inch long and responds to touch; the stomach and kidneys begin to function

  • 9 weeks – the baby will curve its fingers, has taste buds and is developing vocal cords
  • 10 weeks - now at about 1.5 inches long the baby squints and can swallow
  • 11 weeks - at 2 inches long, the baby can urinate and hiccup
  • 12 weeks - the baby can sleep, awaken, turn its head, curl its toes, make a fist, open and close its mouth

  • 13-14 weeks - the baby is at about 3 inches long and the sexual organs are developing; hair begins to grow on its head; the mouth, nose and ears are completely developed

  • 4 months – the baby has eyebrows, eyelashes, finger nails and toe nails, can hear sounds, turn somersaults, yawns, stretches, kicks and punches hard enough for the mother to feel

  • 5 months – the baby is about 12 inches long and responds to sound

  • 6 months - if born now and given proper care, the baby will survive outside the womb

Just time and nourishment are needed to ready the baby for birth…
